Rediscovering Purpose: Why It’s Essential to Mental Health During Life Transitions

In my work as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I’ve supported individuals through all kinds of life transitions—career shifts, loss, parenthood, retirement, relocation. And while every journey is unique, there’s one constant that stands out again and again:

A sense of purpose is one of the most protective factors for mental health.

When people lose touch with that purpose—even temporarily—they often describe feeling stuck, anxious, or disconnected. That sense of “What now?” can be deeply unsettling.

For veterans transitioning out of military service, that question can feel even heavier. But the truth is, many of the emotional responses they experience are not unique to veterans—they’re part of what it means to be human during change.

The Link Between Purpose and Mental Health

Psychological research consistently shows that people with a strong sense of purpose tend to:

  • Handle stress more effectively
  • Bounce back faster from setbacks
  • Experience fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety

Why? Because purpose anchors us.
It reminds us that we matter—that our actions, time, and presence contribute to something meaningful.

When life shifts—when a job ends, a chapter closes, or a role changes—purpose can become blurry. And without that clarity, our mental health can feel unsteady.

You Don’t Need All the Answers—But You Do Need a Next Step

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is the idea that purpose has to be something big, bold, or clearly defined.
But in practice, purpose is often quiet. It can be as simple as:

  • Being present for your family
  • Volunteering in your community
  • Building a new skill or pursuing a long-held interest
  • Contributing your experience to help others

Especially for those leaving highly structured environments—like the military—it’s normal to feel unsure of where to start. But you don’t need a grand vision to move forward. You just need to begin asking, What matters to me now?

3 Strategies to Reconnect with Purpose During Transition

Whether you’re recently out of the military or simply navigating a major life change, here are three ways to begin restoring your sense of purpose:

  1. Practice Reflective Journaling

Ask yourself questions like:

  • What gave me meaning in the past?
  • What values do I want to carry forward?
  • Who do I want to help, support, or influence?

Even a few minutes of honest writing can surface insights you didn’t know were there.

  1. Connect with Others on a Similar Path

Isolation makes everything harder. Find or create opportunities to talk to others who are also transitioning—whether it’s through a nonprofit, community group, or online network. Shared experiences build both empathy and energy.

  1. Set Small, Purpose-Driven Goals

Your next purpose doesn’t have to be “forever.” Focus on short-term commitments that align with your strengths or interests. Taking action—even imperfectly—builds momentum and restores confidence.

Closing Thoughts: Mental Health and Purpose Go Hand in Hand

Major transitions are never easy. It’s okay to feel uncertain, emotional, or overwhelmed. But remember: a sense of purpose isn’t something we find once and keep forever. It’s something we continually shape—and reshape—over time.

If you’re in a season of change, give yourself permission to pause, reflect, and begin again. Your next chapter won’t look like the last one. And that’s not a problem—it’s a possibility.
